About .dev domains

.dev launched in 2019 and is operated by Google Registry. It is a secure ending by design: every .dev name is on the HSTS preload list built into browsers, so a .dev site only ever loads over HTTPS.

It is aimed squarely at people who build β€” developers, tooling, documentation, open-source projects and personal portfolios. Because HTTPS is enforced at the browser level, a .dev site needs a valid certificate from day one; SEVA hosting provides one automatically.

Who a .dev domain is for

  • Developer portfolios and personal sites
  • Documentation, SDKs and developer tools
  • Open-source projects and technical blogs
  • Engineering teams, agencies and studios

What comes with every .dev registration

  • Full DNS management from your SEVA dashboard β€” A, CNAME, MX and TXT records, changed in seconds.
  • Auto-renew on by default, with a reminder email before every renewal, so a name is never lost by accident.
  • Privacy protection on the public ownership record wherever the registry allows it.
  • Free SSL certificates and a one-click connection to SEVA hosting, or point the name anywhere you like.
  • Transfer freedom β€” the domain is registered in your name and you can move it at any time.
FAQ

Questions about .dev

What people ask before choosing a .dev name.

Why does my .dev site need HTTPS?
Because browsers ship with every .dev name hard-coded as HTTPS-only. A .dev site without a certificate will not load at all. SEVA hosting issues and renews the certificate for you.
Is .dev only for software developers?
It is designed for them, and that is how visitors read it. A design studio or a hardware company can use it, but the 'we build things' signal is strongest for software.
Can I run email on a .dev domain?
Yes. The HTTPS rule applies to websites, not to mail. Business mailboxes on a .dev address work the same as on any other ending.
